Boys Soccer tops Towanda, 6-1

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | September 9, 2015

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team started the 2015 season on a high note with a 6-1 victory over Towanda on Tuesday, September 8.

Towanda struck first at 23:27 of the first half on a goal from Jarod Boardman but from that moment forward the game was all Wellsboro. Freshman Cam Tennis found senior Tucker Worthington at the 11:24 mark to tie the game up at 1-1 and Worthington assisted senior Dawson Prough with 5:33 remaining in the first half to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hornets kept the scoring assult up in the second half as sophomore Gabe Leach found sophomore Tanner Runyan at the 34:58 mark to put Wellsboro up 3-1. Junior Josiah Hill scored the 4th goal of the game on an assist from sophomore Dalton Prough at 29:26. Runyan scored his second goal of the game with 7:23 remaining on an assist from Hill, and Hill would add the game's final goal on an assist from senior Nick Webster with 4:49 remaining.

Wellsboro out-shot Towanda 21-1 and had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"It was our first game action in two weeks and it definitely showed early," said head coach John Shaffer. "We were a little flat and a crazy bounce of the ball resulted in Towanda getting the lead. That woke us up. We stepped up the pressure and started to be more aggressive in how we attaked. I am very happy with how the boys responded to adversity. It's a great start to the season."

The Hornets won the JV game 6-0 behind a hat trick from freshman Brett Rudy. Freshmen Adam Cornell and Holden Kennedy, and sophomore Nolan Lohr also added goals on the night.

The win starts the Hornets' season off at 1-0 (1-0 NTL). The team will be back in action on Thursday, September 10 as they host Liberty.
