Middle School Boys top NEB in OT

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | March 7, 2015

The Wellsboro Middle School Boys Basketball team beat Northeast Bradford 30-26 in overtime on Friday, March 6.

Wellsboro struggled to make their layups throughout the game. The Hornets found good looks at the basket, but never seemed to get into an offensive flow. In addition to struggling on the offensive side of the ball the Hornets also found themselves making errors on defense.

The team led 6-4 after the first quarter, but NEB would overtake them 13-12 at hafltime. The Hornets had 8 team fouls in the first half. Luckily for Wellsboro, not one single player had more than two personal fouls. NEB also neglected to take advantage of the team foul situation only going to the line once because of the bonus shooting situation.

Wellsboro still trailed at the end of the third quarter as NEB held a 21-20 lead, but the Hornets took over the fourth quarter and outscored NEB 6-5 to force overtime. In overtime Brandyn Tuttle and Holden Kennedy would score the only field goals of the period securing the victory for the Hornets.

"The boys realize they should have played better tonight,  but I'm proud they kept fighting and played smart down the stretch," said head coach Ed Hamm.

Kennedy led the way for the Hornets with 10 points, five steals, one assist, and five rebounds. Tuttle finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, Andrew Brelo added five points, Carson Davis, Tanner Button, and Cameron Tennis each had two points, and Taynton Repard added a point.

In the B game, the Hornets won 22-6 behind seven points from Carson Davis and six from Karter Witmer.

The win improves the Hornets' record to 4-4. The team will be back in action on Monday, March 9 as they host Wyalusing.
