The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team started the 2016 season off with a win over host Shamokin in the Shamokin Tip-Off Tournament on Friday, December 9.

The Hornets started fast, holding Shamokin to only 2 first quarter points, while scoring 13, 11 of which came before the Indians scored a point. Shamokin made up some ground in the second as both teams scored 9 points in the quarter, but Wellsboro maintained a 22-11 lead at the break.

Both teams scored 15 points each in the third quarter, with the Hornets still holding on to their 11 points lead heading into the final frame. After Shamokin cut the Hornets' lead to 7 midway through the quarter, senior Jacob Singer hit a big three-pointer to push Wellsboro's lead back to 10. Singer also went 4-4 from the foul line in the final minutes to lead all scorers with 12 points, and send the Hornets into the championship game.

Senior Alden Weiner finished with 11 points and 6 rebouns, senior Brandon Lamphier and sophomore Brandyn Tuttle each scored 7 points, juniors Dalton Prough and Collin Pietropola scored 6, and sophomore Holden Kennedy pitched in with 2. Lamphier had 6 assists and 2 steals on the night, Prough recorded 5, 6 rebounds, and a blocked shot, Singer grabbed 5 rebounds, and Tuttle and Pietropola each had 4 rebounds.

The Hornets (1-0) will now face off against Shenandoah Valley tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the championship game.
