Hornets crush South Williamsport 12-3 on Senior Night

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team continued their hot streak with a 12-3 win over South Williamsport on Thursday, May 19 during Senior Night.

The Hornets have now won six consecutive games since dropping three in a row the beginning of the month.

"Tonight's story line is about timely hitting," said head coach Philip Prough. "We were able to get hits when our guys were on base. South could not. That's the biggest difference in tonight's contest."

Wellsboro got an early run as senior Dawson Prough scored off a single by freshman Cam Tennis to make it 1-0. Wellsboro would maintain their lead until the third when South got two runs home to take their only lead of the game after a balk was called on sophomore Johnny Rowland to move the runners into scoring position. Wellsboro was unfazed, however, as senior Nick Tremper brought sophomore Dalton Prough home, then Dawson Prough crossed home plate on a senior Joe Allen sac fly to make it 3-1 Hornets.

The Hornets later exploded for 7 runs in the fourth to put the game away as senior James Mundy, sophomore Parker Mann, Rowland, Dalton Prough, Dawson Prough, Tremper, and Cam Tennis all score to make it 10-2 Hornets after the fourth. South got a run back in the top of the fifth to make it 10-3, but Wellsboro added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning from Mann and Rowland to make it 12-3.

Rowland went the full 7 innings on the mound giving up 6 hits, 4 walks, while striking out 6 for the win.

"Johnny didn't have his best stuff, but he wasn't wild either," continued Prough. "We gave him solid defense and as the game progressed, he threw better. In the final 3 innings, he threw 28 pitches. He's a competitor and it showed tonight."

Mundy was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Hornets at the plate. Tennis was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Tremper and Rowland were both 1-for-3. Dawson Prough, Tremper, and Allen also had 2 RBI's each.

"I'm pleased with the middle of our line up offensively. James is hitting well and Joe and Cameron are making contact consistently. These 3 guys have been the difference over the past 2 weeks."

The win improves the Hornets' record to 12-7 overall. The team will resume a rain-stopped game with Coudersport later this afternoon to close out the regular season before starting District IV playoffs next week.
