The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team scored a 6-1 non-league win in their season opener against South Williamsport on Saturday, September 2.

"I'm very happy with the win today. A great way to start the season," said head coach John Shaffer. "It was a great demonstration of our depth as we had 2 starters out today and everyone stepped up. On a difficult surfice we were able to pass the ball pretty well. We need to improve our defensive organization in the midfield. We also need to finish teams off when we have the chance. We finally did that scoring 4 goals in 5 minutes in the second half."

The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute as senior Gabe Leach assisted senior Tanner Runyan to put Wellsboro up 1-0 early. Runyan later found Leach at 10:02 to make it 2-0. The score remained 2-0 until the 37th minute when South's Sauers scored to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

It remained 2-1 in favor of Wellsboro until the 60th minute when the Hornets exploded for 4 goals. Senior Nolan Lohr started the scoing, then juniors Cam Tennis and Brett Rudy scored back-to-back goals on Leach assists. Lohr then scored the game's final goal at with 15 minutes remaining on a Rudy assist.

Wellsboro took 30 shots on goal to South Williamsport's 8 and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Mounties. Junior Nate Redell made 2 saves in goal.

The win starts the Hornets out at 1-0. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, September 5 as they host NTL rival Athens.
