The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams picked up a pair of wins over Sayre on Monday, February 20.

The girls A team beat Sayre 24-12. The young Lady Hornets led 7-2 after the first, 14-4 at halftime, and 18-6 after the third quarter.  Chelsie English had 7 points and 6 rebounds, Bailey Monks had 6 points, Jena Boyce finished with 5 points and 7 steals, and Sarah Mosher had 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Lindsey Marmara, Abbye Cavanaugh, and Kathryn Burnett all added 2 points each.

"We played well at times and were a little sluggish at times tonight, but the girls pushed through it and we were able to rotate a lot of girls into the game," said head coach Darrell Morris.

The B game was cancelled due to injuries.

In the boys game, Wellsboro picked up a 21-15 win. The Hornets held Sayre to just 4 first half points, while scoring 19, but Sayre came back and went on an 8-0 run in the third to close the score to 19-12, and held Wellsboro to just one basket in the fourth as the Hornets held on for the win.

"I thought we played a great first half of basketball," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "I was pleased with the way we came out on both ends. We just need to figure out as a team a way to close out games."

Joseph Grab led the Hornets with 8 points, Darryn Callahan had 5, and Will Poirier, Zach Singer, Nevin DeCosta, and Danny Timmons added 2 points each. Grab, Poirier, and Keane all grabbed 4 rebounds, Keane had 5 steals, and Singer recorded 2 assists.

Sayre won the B team game 29-15. Drew Manning had 6 points to lead the Hornets.

Both teams will resume play on Wednesday, February 22 at home against Wyalusing.
