A 7-run 6th inning propelled the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team to a 13-8 win over Wyalusing on Tuesday, April 23.

"It was a good win and it was great to see the guys to come back after a tough loss yesterday," head coach Matthew Perry said. "I'm proud of the boys as they battled from one inning to the seventh."

After two scoreless innings the Hornets put three runs up in the top of the third. Wellsboro started off the inning with three straight base hits, led by sophomore Zach Rowland, junior Silas Wagaman, and senior Cam Tennis. Rowland, Tennis, and freshman Isaac Keane all scored to make it 3-0. Juniors Billy Lechler and Carson Davis drove in two of the runs before the inning came to a close.

Wyalusing later tied the game up at 3-all in the bottom half of the inning, then scored 3 more runs in the 4th to leas 6-3.

Both teams added one run each in the 5th inning with the Hornets' run coming from Keane after drawing a lead-off walk. After the bottom of 5th Wyalusing led 7-4 before Wellsboro blew the game wide open in the top of the 6th.

Lechler singled and scored, Davis walked and scored, sophomore Kaeden Mann reached on an error and scored, freshman Darryn Callahan singled and scored, and senior Taynton Repard and Rowland walked and scored to put Wellsboro up 11-7. The Hornets added 2 more runs in the top of the 7th by Mann and Callahan, who both walked to start the inning, and were driven home on a Repard double.

The Rams' comeback attempt in the bottom of the 7th yielded a run but was stopped making the score 13-8.

"We scored a few those runs with two outs," continued Perry. "The boys just kept battling and making the pitcher work hard taking pictures that they need to take and put the ball in play when the time was necessary. Overall it was a great win for a great bunch of guys."

Tennis and Wagaman led the Hornets at the plate, both going 3-for-4. Lechler was 2-for-3, Rowland was 2-for-4, and sophomore Alex Moore, Callahan, Davis, and Repard rounded out the Hornets' combined 14 hits. Wagaman, Rowland, and Repard all drove in 2 runs each while Tennis, Lechler, Moore, Callahan, and Davis also added RBIs.

Davis pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts. Keane pitched the other 3 2/3 innings allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

The win improves the Hornets' record to 5-3 (5-2 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back on the field on Friday, April 26 at Coudersport.
