Lady Wildcats rout Midd-WestATHENS — Athens' girls defeated the Lady Mustangs of Midd-West in the opening round of the District 4 class AAA playoffs by the score of 64-43.

The game started out very sloppy for both teams. Midd-West lead by as many as 10 points in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats crawled back into the game with some clutch foul shooting to pull within 16-13 after one period.

Athens started the second quarter with an 18-0 run, thanks to a pressure defense and clutch shooting by Morgan Westbrook and Emily Lunger.

Rachel Teats stopped the bleeding, at the 3:09 mark with a strong effort inside the paint, but when the smoke cleared, the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Mustangs in the second quarter, 26-6.

Midd-West cut into the Lady Wildcats' lead in the third quarter. Brynn Markley added six points in the period to cut the Athens lead to 51-33 after three quarters.

That was the closest that the Lady Mustangs could get to Athens.

Westbrook lead the Lady Wildcats with six points in the fourth quarter and coach Kelly Burkhart cleared the bench with 1:15 left in the game.

Lunger lead the Lady Wildcats with 17 points and Westbrook had 15, including the only 3-pointer of the game.

Kelli Beiler had 16 points in a losing effort for Midd- West.

Coach Burkhart was very pleased with the way her girls came out in the second quarter, and how Kaitlyn Testin was after every loose ball on the court just as she was preaching all week at practice.

Athens' next game will be against Mifflinburg at a site and time to be determined.
